With Anticipation, An Introduction

Welcome to A Voyage Through Batman Elseworlds, a blog that I will be posting to weekly over the next seven to eight weeks. With the exception of today's introduction, each new blog post will cover my reaction to a new Batman-oriented Elseworlds story that I have not yet read as I try to gain an understanding of what makes a good Batman-oriented Elseworlds and what makes a bad one, with a running ranking at the bottom of each blog containing the stories as I read them.

For those who do not know, Elseworlds was a line of comics published by DC Comics from the late 80s to the early 2000s made up of stories reworking mainline DC heroes such as Batman and Superman into settings they are not traditionally a part of (for example, the first one published, titled Gotham by Gaslight, was a reworking of Batman to be set in the victorian era). The reason for the Batman specific focus of this blog is that for my birthday earlier this month I was gifted three large books collecting almost all of the Elseworlds stories about Batman, so they are the ones I have the easiest access to.

I will begin next week with a review of Batman: Holy Terror by Alan Brennert and Norm Breyfogle. Stay tuned.

  1. That looks cool. I’ve always been fascinated with “What Ifs” and “Elseworlds” stories.

  2. Exciting. I will be using commenting exclusively with comparisons to the Arrowverse and its limited coverage of Elseworlds. Jk, I'll bother you with that stuff to your face. Hope this is a fun and interesting journey for you
